Kuwatani Onsen Kisumino no Sato
Hot Spring Overview
Located at the foot of the Ono Alps in Ono City, Hyogo Prefecture, Kuwatani Onsen is a historic hot spring facility with over 440 years of history, first discovered in 1582 during the Tensho period. The source spring called 'Shio no I' (Salt Well) is a cold mineral spring (source temperature 14-16°C) of sodium chloride type containing iron and magnesium, long revered locally as a therapeutic spring with medicinal properties. The spring water is initially colorless and transparent but transforms to a rusty iron color through oxidation over time. The area flourished as a hot spring resort in the early Taisho era with the opening of the Banshu Railway, but the last facility closed in 2010. Thanks to strong demand from local residents and hot spring enthusiasts, the facility was reopened in May 2018 as the public bathing facility 'Kisumino no Sato' with support from Ono City. The Japanese-style wooden single-story building features separate rock baths for men and women, offering the highly saline source water heated and flowing directly from the spring. Despite its small capacity of only 6 bathers each for men and women, the intimate hideaway atmosphere has earned it the nickname 'The Last Hidden Hot Spring of Kansai.' The on-site soba restaurant 'Pratto Kisumino' serves authentic handmade soba noodles using locally sourced buckwheat flour.
