Sankukai Onsen

Hot Spring Overview

Tucked away in the mountains along the Tajiri River in Nose-cho, Toyono District, Osaka Prefecture, Sankukai Onsen is a solitary day-trip bathhouse marked by a large red hot-spring symbol on its roof. According to local accounts, the facility began in 1991 when the owner of an acupuncture clinic, following an old tradition that the area once held a therapeutic hot spring, drilled roughly 70 meters underground and struck the source. Originally reserved for the clinic's own patients as a therapeutic and rehabilitation bath, it was opened free of charge to disaster victims unable to bathe after the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, and was later developed into a bathhouse open to the general public.

The water is classified as a sulfur-sodium-bicarbonate spring (hydrogen-sulfide type). The source itself is a cold mineral spring at around 16°C, warmed only by heating with no dilution, and receives no chemical disinfection. Three tubs are available at roughly 42°C, 32°C, and the unheated 16°C source itself, with sulfurous-smelling spring water flowing continuously even from the tap taps. The water is colorless and clear with a notably smooth, silky feel on the skin, and is reportedly safe to drink.

The rustic building has long been run almost single-handedly by a local caretaker who handles reception, cleaning, and the springs themselves. Admission is 1,000 yen for adults, 500 yen for children, and 300 yen for infants, with Thursdays and Fridays as regular closing days (irregular closures also occur, so calling ahead is recommended).
