Myoken Onsen Tajima Honkan

Tajima Honkan is a traditional toji (therapeutic bathing) inn in Myoken Onsen, set along the Amori River gorge in Makizono-cho, Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. Myoken Onsen itself began in the late Edo period when the inn founder, Jurouji Tajima, discovered hot water welling up in a rice paddy; the inn opened in the Meiji era and has served local bathers for roughly 170 years. It is the birthplace of Myoken Onsen and has deliberately never been rebuilt as a tourist hotel, retaining the atmosphere of an old healing spa. It is a certified stop on the Kyushu Onsen Trail.

The water is a bicarbonate spring of the older gantsurui-juso classification, emerging at 47 degrees Celsius from the inn private sources. It is delivered straight to the tubs with no reheating and no recirculation. Because the water carries iron, it clouds to a brown tone and throws off flakes of brown mineral sediment. Bathers note a faint metallic aroma and a lightly salty, broth-like taste, and the water leaves skin noticeably soft.

The baths are divided by ailment into three waters. Shinkeitsu-no-yu, the richest in iron, is nicknamed the bath of the gods and is favoured for nerve and muscle pain; Kizu-yu sits at a gentle 41 degrees for cuts and skin trouble; Icho-yu runs hotter at 43 degrees for digestive complaints. Together they are known locally as the bath that lets you leave your walking stick behind. There are no open-air or private baths, only gender-separated indoor tubs, with cascading takase-yu spouts at Kizu-yu and Icho-yu. Day bathing costs 300 yen for junior high school age and above and 150 yen for elementary school children, with reception from 8:30 to 18:30, open year-round. A self-catering wing supports long therapeutic stays.
