Hot Spring Overview

Shinyu Onsen "Kirishima Shinmoesou" is a secluded hot spring lodge located in Takachihokogen, Makizono-cho, Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, situated at an elevation of 920 meters in the foothills of Mount Kirishima. This private national lodge stands as a single mountain retreat within Kirishima-Yaku National Park, surrounded by red pine forests in what can only be described as a hidden paradise and one of Japan's most remote hot springs.

The hot spring has a fascinating historical origin dating back to 1879 (Meiji 12), when it was reportedly discovered by a Hansen's disease patient from Shikoku following divine revelation. Originally called "Hiso-moe-no-yu" (Arsenic Burning Spring), legend tells that the patient received a divine message saying "Dam up the stream where arsenic burns in the water and bathe in it," leading to the discovery of this mystical hot spring.

Shinmoesou's greatest distinction lies in its exceptional sulfur-rich waters, revered among hot spring enthusiasts nationwide as the "Western Grand Champion" for their supreme quality. The milky white waters contain massive amounts of hydrogen sulfide, creating such potent sulfur springs that the characteristic sulfur aroma can be detected long before reaching the facility. The therapeutic benefits were scientifically validated in 1952 by the Dermatology Department of Kyushu University Medical School, proving particularly effective for skin conditions including atopic dermatitis, athlete's foot, and psoriasis.

The facility was renovated in April 2019, offering clean and comfortable accommodations. The location provides spectacular seasonal beauty: frost flowers in winter, azalea (Miyama-kirishima) blooms in spring, cool highland summers reminiscent of a southern Karuizawa, and brilliant autumn foliage. With over 50,000 annual visitors, this popular secret hot spring attracts many long-term therapeutic guests, with some experiencing dramatic health improvements after week-long stays.
