Shiratori Onsen Kamiyu is a historic hot spring facility located on the mid-slope of Mount Shiratori in Ebino City, Miyazaki Prefecture, renowned for its history and spectacular views. The hot spring is famously known as the place where Saigo Takamori, who was defeated in the Seikanron debate, stayed for three months from July to October 1874 (Meiji 7) to heal his body and mind. During his stay, Saigo composed Chinese poems, and a stone monument with his poetry stands at the observation deck.
The facility's greatest feature is the observation open-air bath overlooking the Kakuto Basin. The view has been praised as 'I have never seen such a magnificent vista from an open-air bath.' The panoramic scenery of Ebino City from the highland at approximately 600 meters elevation changes with the seasons and captivates all visitors. The sunset views are particularly breathtaking.
Another unique feature is the natural steam bath utilizing geothermal steam. The facility employs a distinctive system where hot spring components are dissolved by adding cold mountain water to high-temperature steam rising from valley crevices. The steam bath temperature reaches approximately 59°C. A 5-minute walk up the pathway within the grounds leads to 'Onsen Jigoku' (Hot Spring Hell), where steam from the source of Shiratori Onsen billows, allowing visitors to experience the raw power of nature up close.
The spring quality is simple acidic hot spring, effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, sensitivity to cold, and various other conditions. The facility includes 'Shiratori Chaya,' a restaurant serving dishes made with local ingredients. Overnight stays are available, with some rooms featuring private rock baths. The area has a 1000-year history as a Shugendo (mountain asceticism) site, where the monk Shoku opened shrines while pioneering the Kirishima mountain range, making it a spiritually significant hot spring destination.
