Joufu no Taki Shita Onsen (literally "Hot Spring Below Joufu Falls") is a secluded hot spring located in Kusatsu Town, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture. It is a natural hot spring that springs forth hidden behind a small waterfall (with a height of 5-6 meters) downstream from Joufu Falls, which is one of Japan's 100 most famous waterfalls (with a height of 70 meters). This is not a typical hot spring facility but exists as a natural wild spring. Joufu Falls has distinctive rock surfaces formed by the volcanic activity of Mt. Shirane, with rocks in red and black colors and green moss creating a unique landscape. Joufu no Taki Shita Onsen is situated within this beautiful gorge, and its most distinctive feature is its extremely rare location that allows bathers to enjoy the hot spring while being sprayed by the waterfall.
Access from Kusatsu Onsen Town:
From the center of Kusatsu Onsen, proceed about 1.7 km along National Route 292 toward Mt. Shirane, and there is a path on the right that leads to a forest road.
By car, proceed along the forest road for about 5 minutes and park on the shoulder before the hairpin curve.
If cars cannot enter or if on foot, walk about 25 minutes from the forest road entrance.
Beyond two hairpin curves is the Joufu Falls observation deck (total walking time from the forest road entrance is about 40 minutes).
From the Observation Deck to Joufu Falls:
A few minutes from the observation deck, there is a fork in the path to Joufu Falls.
This section was originally an advanced-level trail, but currently the walking path has collapsed due to landslides and is abandoned, so entry is at your own risk.
It is about 0.72 km from the fork to Joufu Falls, normally taking about 30 minutes, but currently requires pushing through deep bamboo grass.
There may be footprints from previous visitors or pink tape as markers, but the path is not clearly defined.
From Joufu Falls to Joufu no Taki Shita Onsen:
After viewing Joufu Falls, you need to go downstream along the valley to find a small waterfall.
There is no path along the stream, and you must push through dense underbrush to descend in some places.
Access to the hot spring below the falls requires experience and proper equipment (such as stream trekking shoes).
