Hot Spring Overview
A mountain valley inn surrounded by mountains on three sides, protruding over the 100-meter-deep Matsukawa Valley. Yamada Onsen was discovered by Fukushima Masanori during the Warring States period and officially opened in 1798 during the mid-Edo period, boasting over 200 years of history as a renowned hot spring. This prestigious traditional inn was beloved by many literary figures including Mori Ogai, Yosano Tekkan and Akiko, Kikuchi Kan, and Aizu Yaichi. The spring quality is sodium-calcium chloride hot spring with a source temperature of about 67°C and pH of 7.4, a neutral high-temperature spring. It has long been cherished as a spring that heals the heart. The main bath is named 'Gomangoku-buro' (50,000 Koku Bath) because the inn's ancestors were chief retainers of the Matsushiro Domain during the Edo period. The sukiya-style low-rise architecture features 19 guest rooms (2 suites, 8 Japanese-Western rooms, 8 Japanese rooms, 1 Western room), where guests can enjoy the outdoor bath while feeling the valley breeze. In 2023, it gained attention as the venue where Fujii Sota achieved his seventh shogi title and became the youngest Meijin. The entire building is non-smoking, with smoking permitted only in designated outdoor areas.
