Yamada Onsen Ooyu

Hot Spring Overview
Yamada Onsen Ooyu is a public bathhouse with over 200 years of history, located in the Shinshu Takayama Onsen Village in Takayama Village, Nagano Prefecture. It is said that the original hot spring was discovered 800 years ago, and in 1798, the water was piped to its current location, forming a hot spring town. The imposing Momoyama-style architecture with irimoya and karahafu gables creates a hot spring atmosphere. The current building was rebuilt in 1989. The interior uses wood throughout, including the bathtubs, walls, ceilings, and window frames, with cypress used for the bathtub edges. The water quality is sulfur-containing sodium-calcium chloride-sulfate spring (hydrogen sulfide type), using a mixture of two sources (Motoyu at 59.4°C and Wanaba source at 80.5°C) at around 67°C. The indoor baths have both hot and lukewarm pools, suitable for those who prefer cooler temperatures. This famous hot spring was loved by many literary figures including Mori Ogai, Kobayashi Issa, Taneda Santoka, Yosano Tekkan and Akiko, and Wakayama Bokusui. There is also a foot bath in front of Ooyu.
