Shibu Onsen Matsunoyu (Pine Bath)
Hot Spring Overview
The fifth of nine public bathhouses in Shibu Onsen, Yamanouchi Town, Nagano Prefecture. The water quality is sodium-calcium sulfide-sulfate hot spring (hypotonic, weakly alkaline, high temperature) with a source temperature of 86.5°C. It is said to be effective for neuralgia and helpful during recovery from illness. A distinctive feature is that moving your body in the water is believed to reduce pain, making it a longtime favorite among therapeutic bathers. Shibu Onsen was discovered about 1,300 years ago by the monk Gyoki and boasts 37 hot spring sources. During the Edo period, literary figures such as Shozan Sakuma, Issa Kobayashi, and Hokusai Katsushika visited here. The public baths are exclusive to overnight guests who borrow keys from their ryokan. Since hot spring water flows abundantly from the source, it is recommended to check the temperature before entering.
