Shibu Onsen Oyu (Grand Bath)

Hot Spring Overview
The ninth and final of nine public bathhouses in Shibu Onsen, Yamanouchi Town, Nagano Prefecture, and the representative 'Supreme Hot Spring' of Shibu Onsen. This venerable source is said to have been discovered about 1,300 years ago by the monk Gyoki, and as the concluding bath of the Nine Bath Pilgrimage, it is also called the 'Finishing Bath'. The water quality is sodium-calcium sulfate-chloride hot spring (hypotonic, neutral, high temperature) with a source temperature of approximately 50°C and a slightly acidic pH of about 4.5. Its distinctive brownish color comes from high iron content, and while it is said to cure all ailments, it is particularly effective for neuralgia, rheumatism, and fertility. In addition to the indoor bath, there is a steam bath utilizing the source vapor, and a free foot bath is available outside. This is the only one of the nine baths where day-trip visitors who are not staying at Shibu Onsen can bathe, with an admission fee of 500 yen. After completing the Nine Bath Pilgrimage and visiting Shibu Takayakushi Temple, one's wishes are said to be fulfilled.
