Shibu Onsen Sasanoyu (Bamboo Grass Bath)

Hot Spring Overview
The second of nine public bathhouses in Shibu Onsen, Yamanouchi Town, Nagano Prefecture. This bath was named after the bamboo grass thicket from which it originally emerged. The water quality is sodium-calcium sulfate-chloride hot spring (hypotonic, slightly acidic, high temperature) with a source temperature of 65°C and bathing temperature of approximately 55°C. It is said to have finishing effects when bathing during recovery from illness, and is believed to be effective for eczema and rashes. Shibu Onsen was reportedly discovered about 1,300 years ago by the monk Gyoki, and during the Sengoku period it served as one of Takeda Shingen's hidden hot springs. During the Nine Bath Pilgrimage, visitors collect stamps on a prayer towel at each bath, and completing the pilgrimage with a visit to Shibu Takayakushi Temple is said to wash away troubles (ku/nine sounds like ku/suffering), ward off evil, ensure safe childbirth and child-rearing, and grant longevity. The public baths are exclusive to Shibu Onsen overnight guests who borrow keys from their ryokan.
