Yoshino Onsen Motoyu
Hot Spring Overview
Yoshino Onsen Motoyu is a secluded single-inn hot spring nestled in Mount Yoshino, Yoshino Town, Nara Prefecture, with a history spanning approximately 300 years since its discovery, and formally established as an inn in 1870 (Meiji 3). Mount Yoshino has long been celebrated both as Japan''s foremost cherry blossom viewing site and as a sacred training ground for Shugendo mountain asceticism associated with Mount Omine. When some ascetics began using the hot spring as a pretext to break their religious vows, authorities ordered the bathhouse closed. However, the spring was secretly maintained as a makeshift bathing facility, earning it the evocative names ''Yoshino''s Hidden Spring'' and ''Naisho-buro'' (the secret bath). In the spring of 1893, the renowned novelist Shimazaki Toson stayed here for approximately one month at the age of 22, dedicating himself to his writing. The room where he stayed has been preserved in its original condition to this day. The inn was also frequented by other literary figures including Omachi Keigetsu and Yamanaka Minetaro.
The spring water is classified as a carbon dioxide-calcium-sodium-bicarbonate spring (hypotonic, neutral, cold mineral spring) with a pH of 6.2, a source temperature of 13.2 degrees Celsius, and a total dissolved content of 3,620 mg/kg. The free carbon dioxide content of 2,183 mg is more than double the qualifying threshold of 1,000 mg, making this one of Japan''s rare and prized carbon dioxide springs, counted among the three rarest spring types in the country. With 125 mg of metasilicic acid, it also qualifies as a beauty spring. The water is pale yellow, turning ochre through iron oxidation, with carbon dioxide bubbles visibly rising to the surface. The spring is served as free-flowing source water with heating but no dilution, circulation, or chlorination, maintained at a gentle temperature below 41 degrees Celsius.
The bathing facilities consist of one indoor bath each for men and women, intimate in scale at three to four person capacity, befitting a true hidden spring. The natural flow rate is 7.9 liters per minute from a self-surging source. Day-trip bathing costs 800 yen for both adults and children, available from 11:00 to 15:00 (last admission 14:30), except during the Golden Week period from April through May. Overnight accommodation is available across seven guest rooms, with check-in at 14:00 and check-out at 10:00. Here, enveloped in the tranquility of Yoshino''s cherry blossoms and the living heritage of Shugendo asceticism, guests can luxuriate in the same carbonated waters that inspired generations of literary masters.
