Amami Onsen Nantenen

Hot Spring Overview

Nantenen is a solitary ryokan standing beside the Amami River at the southern edge of Kawachinagano, Osaka, near the foot of the historic Kimi Pass pilgrimage route to Mount Koya. Its hot spring traces back to a Nanboku-cho era bathhouse called Gokuraku Onsen, opened by a Shinto priest of Nagaretani Hachiman Shrine, though it fell into disuse after the shrine burned down in 1750. The current main building, completed in 1913, was originally an annex bathhouse in Sakai's Ohama Park, designed by the Tatsuno-Katayama architectural firm led by Kingo Tatsuno, the architect behind Tokyo Station and the Bank of Japan headquarters. Relocated to Amami in 1935 and reopened as Nantenen in 1949, the building was registered as a national tangible cultural property in 2003 for its rare sukiya-style Japanese architecture.

The spring is classified as a simple weak radioactive spring (natural radium spring), emerging at a cool 20 degrees Celsius with a neutral, hypotonic pH of about 6.55. The water is colorless, odorless, and faintly smooth to the touch, traditionally valued for cuts, poor circulation, joint pain, neuralgia, and high blood pressure. Drawn from the ryokan's own source, the water is heated for bathing without circulation filtration or chemical disinfectants, and the private open-air bath at the detached Seiryutei annex is fed by a genuine flow-through cypress tub.

The main building houses separate large baths for men and women, set within roughly 10,000 square meters of Japanese garden that changes with the seasons, from spring cherry blossoms and summer fireflies to autumn foliage and winter snow. Day-trip visits center on set kaiseki meal plans starting around 8,800 yen, as bathing alone is not offered; overnight stays are limited to the thirteen rooms of the main building plus the single riverside Seiryutei annex.
