Dorogawa Onsen Hanaakari no Yado Yanagiya
Hot Spring Overview
Hanaakari no Yado Yanagiya is a small eight-room Japanese-style inn in the village of Dorogawa, Tenkawa, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, set within the Dorogawa Onsen hot spring village that serves as the traditional trailhead for pilgrims climbing the sacred, UNESCO-listed Mount Omine. Formerly run under the name Yanagiya Ryokan by an earlier generation, the inn is now managed by its current proprietress, who has carried on the tradition of handmaking kakimochi and kiriko rice crackers that guests have long taken home as souvenirs. The property consists of a main building facing a clear mountain stream and an annex with a spacious hall, decorated year-round with seasonal wildflowers, giving it the quiet atmosphere typical of this mountain ascetic village.
The inn draws its water from a source called Shinsen ('New Spring') within Dorogawa Onsen, classified as a simple hot spring, hypotonic, mildly alkaline and low temperature. Because the source emerges at a low 30.7 degrees Celsius (measured at an air temperature of 24 degrees), the water is heated before bathing, and some water is added, though the bath is not run on a circulating filtration system. The inn advertises itself as one of the few in Dorogawa offering genuine flow-through source water, and the spring is said to be beneficial for neuralgia, muscle and joint pain, cold sensitivity and fatigue recovery.
The inn has separate indoor baths for men and women that were renovated into semi-open-air baths, where guests can soak while listening to the sound of the nearby stream. Dinner and breakfast are served not in the guest rooms but in dedicated dining areas, and the proprietress's home-style cuisine, featuring Nara-grown vegetables, wild boar from the Omine mountains (a registered Nara game-meat establishment), and low-pesticide rice from a contracted farm in Shiga Prefecture, is well regarded. Check-in is at 15:00 and check-out at 10:00, with free parking for ten cars on a first-come basis. Guests hoping for a day-trip bath should contact the inn in advance.
