Omaki Onsen
Hot Spring Overview
Omaki Onsen, located in Toga Village, Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, is a renowned secluded single-inn retreat accessible only by boat, perched on the shores of the Komaki Dam lake along the Shogawa River. The hot spring was discovered in 1183 by Heike clan refugees who fled after their defeat at the Battle of Kurikara Pass. When the Komaki Dam was completed in 1930, the original source sank beneath the lake, but the inn relocated to the lakeside and continues to draw water from the submerged source. The water quality is sodium-calcium chloride-sulfate spring, colorless and transparent with a slight hydrogen sulfide odor and saltiness. The high-temperature water from the lake bottom is remarkably soft on the skin and warms the body to its core. Three outdoor baths offer panoramic views of the magnificent Shogawa Gorge through the changing seasons. Featured in the Michelin Guide Hokuriku 2021 Special Edition as a particularly comfortable ryokan and selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Hot Springs. Famous as a filming location for suspense dramas, with signed photographs from cast members lining the hallways. With no cell phone reception, this secluded paradise offers a luxurious escape from everyday life.
