Shogawa Yudani Onsen
Hot Spring Overview
Shogawa Yudani Onsen, located in the Shogawa Onsen area of Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture, is a historic hot spring that opened in 1922 (Taisho 11). Legend has it that it was discovered by Heike clan refugees, Kiso Yoshinaka, and Uesugi Kenshin in ancient times, and was re-excavated by boring in 1891 (Meiji 24). Currently an unmanned facility, visitors simply place the 500 yen bathing fee in a box—a charmingly rustic style. The water quality is sodium-calcium chloride spring at 39.0 degrees Celsius, enjoyed as free-flowing natural spring water without dilution or heating. Notable is its high alkalinity at pH 9.5; the slightly bluish transparent water is gentle on the skin with a faint sulfur scent. 202 liters per minute naturally gushes from a 45-meter deep source. The unique seesaw-style water outlet spans between the male and female baths—pressing one side causes water to gush forcefully from the other. From the windows, visitors can enjoy views of the Komaki Dam spillway and Shogawa Gorge scenery, fully immersing in the secluded hot spring atmosphere.
