Sanshien is a Kokumin Shukusha (public lodge) located in Shikano-cho, Tottori City, in the heart of the historic castle town once ruled by warlord Kamei Korenori with a 38,000-koku domain. Shikano Onsen was first discovered in February 1955 (Showa 30) when a 42-degree spring was struck at a shallow depth of 36 meters, and the lodge itself opened in 1972 (Showa 47). The water is a mild alkaline simple hot spring with a source temperature of 62.0 degrees Celsius and a pH of 7.7, renowned for its exceptionally gentle texture and nicknamed onna-mizu (women's water) for the silky, moisturized feeling it leaves on the skin. Highlights include two garden open-air baths Hori-no-Yu and Oishi-no-Yu overlooking a vast Japanese garden, observation baths offering views of Mt. Jubu, and 24-hour fresh-source flow-through bathing throughout all baths, with a free foot bath also available on the premises.
