Tateshina Shinyu Onsen
Hot Spring Overview
Tateshina Shinyu Onsen is a single-inn hot spring retreat on the banks of the Takinoyu River in the Tateshina Kogen highlands of Kitayama, Chino City, Nagano Prefecture, with a history of about a century since its founding in Taisho 15 (1926). Its private source, known as 'Shingen no Kakureyu,' is said to have been a hidden hot spring favored by the warlord Takeda Shingen, and the inn has hosted noted literary figures such as Ito Sachio, Saito Mokichi, and Dazai Osamu, who stayed here to rest and write.
The water is a simple hot spring (weakly acidic, hypotonic, low-temperature type), colorless and odorless with a smooth, light texture on the skin. For hygiene management, the baths use a circulation filtration system, with a complete water change at least once a week and ongoing chlorine disinfection.
Facilities include an open-air bath directly connected to the main bathhouse along the mountain stream, three types of private reservable open-air baths, a women-only open-air bath called 'Tenyo no Yu,' a tatami-floor indoor bath, and a women-only bedrock bath called 'Tateshina Stargazer.' The inn also features a library lounge with roughly 30,000 books and a private dining room; the hot spring is reserved exclusively for overnight guests.
