Shimosuwa Onsen Shinyu
Hot Spring Overview
Located in Shimosuwa Town, Suwa District, Nagano Prefecture, 'Shinyu' (meaning 'new bath') is a communal bathhouse in Shimosuwa Onsen that opened in 1927 (Showa 2). It was named 'Shinyu' because it was built in the Showa era, making it relatively new among the local bathhouses. The exterior features distinctive early Showa-era retro charm with gray block-like walls, emerald green window frames, and brick-style columns. The source water is a blend from Tanga No. 1 and No. 2 springs, with the water quality being sodium-calcium sulfate-chloride hot spring (mildly alkaline, low osmotic pressure, high temperature). The source temperature is 58.8 degrees Celsius with a pH of 8.69, delivered as completely natural free-flowing water with no dilution or heating. The clear, colorless water has a soft feel and is characteristically hot. The bathing area is compact with a single elongated tub that accommodates about 4 people, creating an intimate, homey atmosphere. The spring is effective for cuts, peripheral circulation disorders, cold sensitivity, depression, and dry skin conditions. At 300 yen for adults, open year-round from 5:30 AM to 10:00 PM, it is a beloved local bathhouse that has been cherished by residents for generations.
