Located in the center of Shimosuwa Town, Suwa District, Nagano Prefecture, about a 6-minute walk from Suwa Taisha Shimosha Akimiya shrine, 'Sugeno Onsen' is a communal bathhouse founded in 1886 (Meiji 19) with approximately 140 years of history. With its charming Showa-era retro atmosphere, it offers visitors a nostalgic experience reminiscent of stepping back in time to a traditional Japanese bathhouse. The water quality is sodium-calcium sulfate-chloride hot spring with a source temperature of 58.8 degrees Celsius and pH of 8.6 (alkaline). The clear, colorless, soft water flows freely from a spout at the center of a large oval-shaped bathtub, with delicate mineral deposits (yu-no-hana) floating on the surface. The bathing temperature is approximately 42-43 degrees Celsius, relatively moderate compared to other Shimosuwa Onsen bathhouses known for their hot water. The spring is effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, chronic digestive disorders, cuts, burns, and chronic skin conditions. At just 300 yen for adults, open year-round from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and only a 5-minute walk from JR Shimosuwa Station, it is a beloved local hot spring.
