Tomuraushi Onsen Higashitaisetsu-so
Hot Spring Overview
A secluded hot spring lodge (Kokumin-Shukusha) located at 640 meters above sea level in the Eastern Daisetsu area of Daisetsuzan National Park. Mount Tomuraushi (2,141m), one of Japan's 100 Famous Mountains, means 'Place Where Many Flowers Grow' in the Ainu language, and is revered as 'Kamui Mintara' (Playground of the Gods) by locals and known as 'The Annex of Daisetsu.' The hot spring was opened in 1964 or 1965 (Showa 39-40), when the Higashitaisetsu-so town rest facility also began operations, later becoming a Kokumin-Shukusha (People's Lodge). Tomuraushi Onsen serves as the only lodging facility in the Eastern Daisetsu area and is popular as a base for mountain climbing and trekking. The spring source temperature is approximately 98°C with a pH of 8.1 (weakly alkaline), classified as sodium-chloride and bicarbonate spring. Natural spring water flows at 110 liters per minute, offering 100% free-flowing natural hot spring bathing. The weakly alkaline spring quality acts like soap, removing old skin cells and dirt, earning it the reputation as 'beauty water.' Rich in metasilicic acid with high moisturizing effects, the skin becomes smooth and silky after bathing. The large public bath features an 8-meter high ceiling creating an open atmosphere, while the open-air bath overlooks the Yu-Tomuraushi River. The natural hot spring steam sauna using source steam is characterized by its sulfur aroma, offering a 65°C sauna, 10.5°C cold bath, and outdoor air bathing. All 29 guest rooms offer different views and are available in Japanese-style, Western-style, or Japanese-Western combination rooms. Meals feature seasonal kaiseki cuisine using local ingredients including Shintoku venison, Shintoku chicken, Jersey beef, lily bulbs, and shiitake mushrooms. Nearby attractions include Boukakudai Observatory offering views of Mount Tomuraushi (accessible by car from June), and Kodaki Falls (5m wide, 15m high) suitable for beginner trekkers. The beautiful area called 'Japanese Garden' on Mount Tomuraushi overwhelms visitors with its picture-perfect scenery of alpine plants, Amanuma pond, and rock gardens. In autumn, the Tomuraushi River and geyser tower with autumn foliage are highlights.
