Fukiage Roten-no-Yu
Hot Spring Overview
Fukiage Roten-no-Yu is a free, natural open-air hot spring nestled in the primeval forest on the slopes of Mt. Tokachidake, at an elevation of approximately 1,000 meters, in Kamifurano Town, Hokkaido. Located within Daisetsuzan National Park, this wild onsen offers an extraordinary bathing experience with pools built atop a massive rock formation and a waterfall cascading right beside the bathers. First discovered around 1897, the bathing area was formally established in 1991. It gained nationwide fame in 1995 when actress Rie Miyazawa filmed an iconic bathing scene here for the beloved Japanese TV drama Kita no Kuni kara (From the North Country). The spring water is classified as acidic calcium-sodium sulfate-chloride hot spring with a pH of 2.6 and a source temperature of 47 degrees Celsius. There are two pools of differing temperatures. As a completely unmanaged wild hot spring, there are no changing rooms, lighting, or facilities. Bathing is mixed-gender and free of charge, available 24 hours. Visitors should be aware of potential bear encounters and winter road closures. The nearby Hakugin-so lodge is a five-minute walk away.
