Taisetsu Kogen Sanso
Hot Spring Overview
Taisetsu Kogen Sanso is a solitary mountain lodge located at 1,260 meters above sea level in Daisetsuzan National Park, on the backside of the Daisetsuzan mountain range behind Mount Asahidake, hence also called 'Ura-Taisetsu' (Back Daisetsu). Due to heavy snowfall, the lodge operates only 123 days per year, typically from early June to early October, making it a truly remote hot spring destination. The lodge has historical significance, having been visited by Emperor Showa in 1968 and Prince Mikasa in 1980, and is a member of the 'Japan Association of Secluded Hot Springs.'
The hot spring is a simple sulfur spring (hypotonic acidic high-temperature spring, pH 2.7) with a source temperature of 71.2°C and a natural flow rate of 150 liters per minute, offering 100% source-fed water. It is one of the rare milky-white natural hot springs in Hokkaido, featuring separate indoor and outdoor baths for men and women, with alternating access between 18:30-19:00. Overnight guests can use the baths throughout the night (cleaning time 9:00-10:30), with the outdoor bath temperature maintained at 42°C.
The area is dotted with ponds called 'Kogen-numa' (Highland Ponds), and the hot spring serves as the starting point for walking trails around these ponds. The area features dense alpine vegetation, highland ponds reflecting perennial snow patches, flower meadows, and spectacular rock walls with columnar joints cutting into the mountainside. Particularly during autumn foliage season (mid to late September), the area is nationally famous for Japan's earliest autumn colors and is considered one of the most beautiful fall foliage spots in the country.
As the area is brown bear habitat, hikers must attend a short briefing at the bear information center before setting out. The surrounding trekking courses also serve as mountain climbing routes to Mount Midori and are popular with mountaineers as a base for Daisetsuzan climbing. The lodge has 16 rooms, offering a special place to enjoy hot springs and mountain scenery surrounded by pristine nature in complete tranquility.
