Renge Onsen Lodge sits at an altitude of 1,475 meters, serving as a mountain lodge gateway to the Northern Alps from the Niigata side.
The lodge is a popular base for hikers heading to Mt. Hakuba and Mt. Asahi, both located at the northernmost edge of the Northern Alps. These peaks are known for their lingering snowfields and are a treasure trove of alpine plants, both in variety and abundance.
The hot spring at the lodge features both a rustic open-air bath and a cozy indoor bath, offering a perfect place to relax surrounded by nature.

After considering various aspects, I’d say this hot spring deserves a rating of around 3.5 to 4, but I’ve decided to give it a solid 4.
You can drive up to the base of the mountain, but reaching the hot spring itself requires a hike. It’s well-known among mountain climbers, and not commonly visited by casual tourists. The baths are mixed-gender, with simple changing areas and rustic open-air settings, adding to the wild, untouched charm.
Soaking in a natural hot spring at 1,500 meters above sea level is a truly special experience — I highly recommend trying it at least once!

The hot spring at Renge Onsen Lodge features both rustic open-air baths and a cozy indoor bath, offering a peaceful soak in the heart of nature. The hot spring water comes from five different sources, each with its own unique mineral composition and character:
Sōyu (Indoor Bath): Simple hot spring, milky white
Senki-no-Yu (Open-air Bath): Simple acidic spring, milky white
Ōgon-yu (Open-air Bath): Bicarbonate earth spring, clear
Yakushi-yu (Open-air Bath): Acidic gypsum spring, slightly milky
Mikunichi-no-Yu (Open-air Bath): Simple acidic spring, clear
Each bath offers a different experience, surrounded by untouched wilderness and the changing seasons of the Japanese Alps.
