Kanetsuri Onsen

Hot Spring Overview
Kanetsuri Onsen, located in Unazuki Onsen, Kurobe City, Toyama Prefecture, is a historic hot spring nestled in the Kurobe Gorge within Chubu-Sangaku National Park. Opened during the Bunsei era (1818-1831), it flourished in the Meiji period, rivaling Kuronagi Onsen downstream. Situated at the southern foot of Mt. Nishi-Kanetsuri between the Tateyama and Ushiro-Tateyama mountain ranges, its greatest charm lies in the rustic outdoor baths that spring from the Kurobe River riverbed. Hot spring water gushes from the sandy riverbed, allowing visitors to dig their own private outdoor bath with a shovel. The water quality is simple thermal spring at about 42 degrees Celsius, colorless, transparent, and odorless with free-flowing natural water. Said to be effective for rheumatism and neuralgia, it is selected as one of Japan's 100 Famous Hot Springs. From the riverbed, visitors can view the perennial snow across the river that never melts even in summer, combining with the gorge scenery for spectacular views. The current inn was rebuilt after the 1995 flood, operating only a café for day visitors. This secluded hot spring, accessible only by the Kurobe Gorge Railway trolley train, is open seasonally from May to November.
