Hot Spring Overview
A hot spring resort located within Kurikoma Quasi-National Park in the Minase district of Yuzawa City, Akita Prefecture. About 8 hot spring ryokan line the gorge along the Minase River, known as Oyasukyo (Oyasu Gorge).
The main attraction is the Oyasukyo Daifunto (Great Geyser), where 98-degree Celsius hot water and steam burst through cracks in the gorge rocks with tremendous force. The water quality is alkaline simple hot spring, with source temperatures among the hottest in Japan (approaching 95-100 degrees Celsius).
It is known to be effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, bruises, cold sensitivity, women's ailments, fatigue recovery, and general health improvement.
The hot spring town features various distinctive inns including Tarobee Ryokan, Matsubakan, Motoyu Club, and Tsuruminekakan, each with unique baths. The representative Tarobee Ryokan offers the Yakushi-no-yu main bath featuring 100-year-old Akita cedar, and the Toki-no-yu bath decorated with Kurikoma pottery from Miyagi Prefecture, all providing pure kakenagashi (free-flowing source) hot spring water. This atmospheric hot spring resort offers seasonal gorge beauty with steam rising from numerous locations.
