Onikobe Onsen Todoroki Ryokan
Hot Spring Overview
Todoroki Ryokan is a lone inn in the Onikobe hot spring district of northwestern Miyagi Prefecture, inside Kurikoma Quasi-National Park. It stands on the left bank of the Arao River, which feeds the reservoir behind Naruko Dam, on the southwestern foot of Mount Arao and surrounded by a quiet stand of cedars. The Todoroki spring it draws from is an old one: the original source is said to have been found around the Genna era (1615-1624) and a second source in the late Edo period. Today Todoroki Ryokan is the only lodging using this water. It participates in the Naruko hot spring district bath-hopping ticket scheme and is well regarded among hot spring enthusiasts as an unpretentious inn untouched by mass tourism.
The water comes from the inn's own source, Shin-Todoroki No. 3, and is served entirely free-flowing without recirculation. It is classified as a simple hot spring, hypotonic, weakly alkaline and high in temperature, with a pH of 7.8 and a source temperature of about 75 degrees Celsius. No water is added, no heating is applied, and there is no filtration, bath additive or chlorine treatment. Officially described as colorless and odorless, it in fact carries more than 200 mg per liter of metasilicic acid, a faint gypsum-like mineral scent and visible flakes of mineral bloom. The water feels notably smooth on the skin, and the tubs settle at around 42 to 43 degrees. It is recommended for muscle and joint pain, poor circulation and fatigue, and has long been said locally to help eye ailments.
There are three bathing options: separate indoor baths for men and women, a large mixed-gender open-air bath called Arayu that looks out over a tended garden, and a private open-air bath named Komorebi-no-yu that guests may use free of charge. Arayu comfortably holds 15 to 20 bathers and has separate changing rooms, though swimwear, wrapped towels and photography are all prohibited. Day-trip bathing costs 600 yen for adults and 400 yen for children, with admission from 10:00 to 14:00. Overnight capacity is currently limited to four rooms, with rates from 13,900 yen including two meals built around local wild vegetables, mushrooms and river fish, served with Sasanishiki rice grown in Osaki. Wi-Fi reaches every room, but credit cards are not accepted and payment is cash only.
