Higashi-Naruko Onsen Baba Onsen
Hot Spring Overview
Baba Onsen is a traditional cure inn on the outskirts of Higashi-Naruko Onsen, in the eastern part of the Naruko hot spring region in Osaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. It stands in the Baba district along National Route 47, roughly midway between Kawatabi Onsen and the Washinosu district of Higashi-Naruko, an area whose bathing culture dates to the era when the lords of the Sendai domain kept a bathing villa here. A free-standing gabled bathhouse hut sits in the inn's front garden, rebuilt in 2001. Among hot spring enthusiasts across Japan the inn is known simply as the place of black water and petroleum aroma, and it draws high praise while remaining entirely unpolished in appearance.
The water is a sodium bicarbonate spring, classified as hypotonic, neutral and high-temperature, drawn from two private sources named Baba-no-Yu No. 1 and No. 2. The No. 2 source feeding the inn's indoor bath measures 48.0 degrees Celsius at the wellhead, pH 6.9, with total dissolved solids of about 1,573 mg per kilogram according to a November 2014 analysis. The No. 1 source, piped to the hut in the garden, runs around 47.2 degrees at pH 6.8, and its color ranges from strong oolong tea brown to something close to black, carrying a pronounced aroma often described as coal tar or crude oil. Nothing is added or processed: no dilution, no heating, no circulation filtering and no chlorination. The No. 1 source is famous for the dense film of fine bubbles it deposits on the skin.
Bathing is split between the inn's indoor baths, separated by gender with a private tub available, and the garden hut known locally as the Baba Onsen public bath, a single mixed-gender room where changing area and tub share one space and which is used on a 30-minute private booking basis. Day-trip bathing in the inn's indoor bath costs 600 yen for adults and 400 yen for children, generally 11:00 to 16:00 with a 15:00 close on Saturdays; the hut alone is 300 yen, and 600 yen covers both. Overnight stays serve the self-catering cure tradition, from around 4,200 yen without meals up to roughly 8,000 to 9,500 yen with two meals. A shared kitchen and washing machine are available and parking is free. Closing days are irregular, so calling ahead is advised.
