Tango Onsen Hashiudoso

Tango Onsen Hashiudoso is an eleven-room hot spring inn in Taiza, a fishing village facing the Sea of Japan in Tango Town, Kyotango City, Kyoto Prefecture. The place name Taiza is written with characters read hashiudo, said to derive from a legend that Empress Hashihito, mother of Prince Shotoku, took refuge here; local people changed the reading out of deference to her name. The inn takes that old reading as its own, and the celebrated rock formation Tateiwa rises from the sea directly in front of it.

The water comes from the Tango Onsen source and is classified as a sodium-calcium sulfate spring, weakly alkaline and hypotonic. It is piped directly from the source, giving the baths an abundant flow, and the clear, colorless water is said to help with nerve and joint pain, arteriosclerosis, poor circulation, bruises, chronic skin conditions and recovery from illness.

The bathing area comprises an indoor bath and an open-air bath for each gender, plus a sauna and a cold plunge. From the open-air bath guests look out on Tateiwa and the Sea of Japan, bathing to the sound of the waves. Day-trip bathing costs 600 yen for junior high school students and above and 300 yen for children aged three and over, with under-threes free, available 16:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and 13:00 to 22:00 on weekends and holidays (last entry 21:30). The inn closes on Tuesdays. Free parking is available for 25 cars and one large vehicle.
