Komadori Onsen is a day-trip hot spring facility nestled in the mountainous Higashikawa district of Aki City, Kochi Prefecture, located at 550 Kurose, Aki. About 30 minutes by car from central Aki City, the onsen sits deep within a quiet satoyama landscape. The springs were discovered in 1984 (Showa 59) when a local resident noticed yu-no-hana (mineral deposits indicating a hot spring) and dug down to find the source. In 1994 (Heisei 6), the spring rights were transferred to Aki City, and in 1996 (Heisei 8) the present public facility opened as Komadori Onsen. The name komadori comes from the Japanese robin (Erithacus akahige), a bird that visits this area and is celebrated for its clear, rippling song. Surrounded by deep mountains, the bathhouse offers seasonal scenery in every direction and is regarded as one of Kochi's truly secluded onsen retreats. The waters are classified as a simple sulfur cold mineral spring, with a source temperature of approximately 17 degrees Celsius. The bath water is famed for its soft, silky touch and faint sulfur fragrance, and is heated for comfortable bathing while remaining a source-fed (kakenagashi) supply. The on-site dining hall serves set meals featuring local mountain produce, and during January and February visitors can enjoy seasonal dishes using Iregouchi daikon, a rare heirloom radish unique to Tosa. The complex also includes a campsite and car-camping spaces, making it a destination for those seeking immersion in nature.
