Ureshino Onsen
Hot Spring Overview
Ureshino Onsen, located in Ureshino City, Saga Prefecture, is nationally renowned as one of Japan's Three Great Beauty Hot Springs. Its history dates back to ancient times, with a legend that Empress Jingu healed wounded soldiers in these waters upon returning from the Korean campaigns, and their joy ('ureshii') gave the area its name. During the Edo period, the town flourished as a post station along the Nagasaki Kaido highway, and German physician Philipp Franz von Siebold is recorded to have visited. The representative public bathhouse, Siebold no Yu, is a Gothic-style wooden two-story building evoking Taisho-era romance, reopened in 2010. The water quality is sodium-bicarbonate and chloride spring (soda spring) with a source temperature of 85-95 degrees Celsius. With a mildly alkaline pH of 7.5-8.5, the colorless and transparent water has a remarkably smooth feel. Rich in sodium, this soda spring softens rough skin and restores moisture, earning its reputation as a beauty bath. The hot spring town features approximately 60 ryokans and hotels, and the local specialty Ureshino onsen yudofu (hot spring water tofu) is a unique culinary tradition where tofu melts to a silky texture in the mineral-rich water. The opening of Ureshino Onsen Station on the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen line in 2022 has greatly improved access.
