Ashitsuki Hot Spring

Hot Spring Overview

Ashitsuki Onsen, the only hot spring on Shikinejima with clear, colorless water, is known for its striking natural beauty and therapeutic properties. The spring's water is classified as a sodium-chloride strong saline hot spring, offering benefits for external ailments such as cuts, scrapes, muscle pain, poor circulation, hemorrhoids, and skin conditions.

Unlike other springs on the island like Jinata Onsen, which are known as “internal medicine baths,” Ashitsuki Onsen is referred to as the “surgical bath.” Before medical facilities were available on the island, locals would choose their hot springs based on their health conditions—making this spot a true fountain of life for residents.

Set against a wild rocky landscape with vibrant pine trees, it lives up to the name “Shikine-Matsushima.” The location is also just a 2-minute walk from Onsen Gatayu, so it's easy to enjoy both hot springs during your visit.

Please note that swimsuits are required for bathing.

About Secluded Rating

Access (Difficulty to Reach)

4/5

Within 1 hour

Due to the challenging access from Tokyo and the wild, rugged nature of this seaside hot spring directly connected to the ocean, I would rate it a 4 out of 5 as a secluded onsen experience.

Swimwear is required.
