Mikuni Onsen Bouyourou
Hot Spring Overview
Bouyourou is an exclusive 7-room auberge-style hot spring ryokan situated within the Echizen-Kaga Coast Quasi-National Park in Mikuni Town, Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture. Founded in 1868 (Meiji 1) as a shipping agent (kaisenmondoya), it transformed into a cuisine-focused ryokan as the shipping industry declined with railway development in the late Meiji era. The inn is historically renowned as a favorite retreat of Matsudaira Shungaku, the celebrated lord of Echizen Domain and one of the Four Wise Lords of the Bakumatsu period, who is said to have savored sake cups while watching sunsets over the Sea of Japan from the nearby cliffs of Tojinbo. In November 2021, the entire property was rebuilt from its classic wooden architecture into a stylishly modern concrete structure, timed to coincide with the crab season opening. The interiors incorporate locally sourced Shakudani stone, Echizen washi paper, and works by regional artisans, embodying Fukui's cultural heritage. Every room commands views of the Sea of Japan and features a private bath with free-flowing Mikuni Onsen water. The sodium-calcium chloride spring water is colorless, transparent, and smooth, perfectly complementing the inn's renowned Echizen crab cuisine, including imperially presented crabs, making it one of Hokuriku's premier luxury ryokans.
