Daisen Hi-no-Kamidake Onsen Goen Yuin
Hot Spring Overview
Goen Yuin is a day-use hot spring facility located along the approach to Daisen-ji Temple at an altitude of about 760 meters on the slopes of Mt. Daisen — also known as Hi-no-Kamidake, the Mountain of the Fire God — in Daisen Town, Tottori Prefecture. The facility is named after the eminent monk Goen, revered as the restorer of Daisen-ji Temple in the Edo period, and stands a mere five-minute walk from the Hakuroza parking lot, the main gateway for Daisen pilgrimage. Drawn from a depth of 1,200 meters underground, the source water is a weakly alkaline simple hot spring with an oxidation-reduction potential of approximately minus 320 millivolts — among the highest reductive values in Japan — and is appreciated as a clear, colorless, and odorless water believed to deliver antioxidant effects beneficial for fatigue recovery and overall wellness.
The indoor bath, named Kami-no-Yu (Bath of the Gods), is a cavernous bathhouse illuminated by flickering torches, designed to soothe all five senses. The open-air bath commands sweeping views of a seasonal Japanese garden and the majestic ridges of Mt. Daisen, offering ever-changing panoramas of fresh greenery, autumn foliage, and silent snowfall through the year. As the closest hot spring to the summit of Mt. Daisen, it is ideally suited for refreshing the body after climbing the mountain or after visiting Daisen-ji Temple and the Inner Shrine of Ogamiyama-jinja.
Admission is reasonably priced at 790 yen for adults (junior high school age and over), 300 yen for elementary school children, and free for preschoolers. Bathers receive a complimentary mini serving of the facility's house-made rich soy milk or soy-milk soft-serve ice cream — a welcome treat unique to the venue. Operating hours vary by season: 10:00 to 18:00 from April through November and 11:00 to 19:00 from December through March (until 20:00 on weekends and holidays), with regular closure on Wednesdays. The facility bustles with skiers seeking warmth in winter. On site, a shop sells house-made tofu and soy-milk products crafted using the famed Daisen spring water, and a restaurant serves dishes featuring local Tottori ingredients. The Hakuroza parking lot (free in summer, paid in winter) is conveniently available, and access from Yonago IC on the Yonago Expressway via Tottori Prefectural Route 24 (the Daisen Tourist Road) takes about 15 minutes by car.
