Tsukigatani Onsen Tsuki no Yado

Hot Spring Overview

Tsukigatani Onsen Tsuki no Yado is a secluded single-inn hot spring nestled along the upper reaches of the Katsuura River in Kamikatsu Town, Katsuura District, Tokushima Prefecture. According to legend, when the revered Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi was practicing asceticism in this area, the Medicine Buddha Yakushi Nyorai appeared on the rocky cliffs of the sacred mountain Tsukigatani and proclaimed that the spring water here was a medicinal spring capable of curing all ailments. Kamikatsu Town is also nationally renowned as the first municipality in Japan to declare a Zero Waste policy in 2003.

The spring water is classified as a simple sulfur cold mineral spring (hypotonic alkaline cold mineral spring) with a source temperature of 15 degrees Celsius, heated for bathing use. The source is located approximately 1.5 kilometers from the facility on the sacred mountain Tsukigatani, where cold spring water naturally seeps through rock crevices and is piped to the inn. Therapeutic indications include neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, frozen shoulder, motor paralysis, chronic digestive disorders, cold sensitivity, chronic skin conditions, chronic gynecological conditions, and diabetes.

The facility features architecture incorporating locally sourced Kamikatsu cedar wood and diatomaceous earth. From the large windows of the main bathhouse, bathers can enjoy views of the beautiful Katsuura River and the surrounding mountains of Kamikatsu. The bathing area centers on a rock bath and includes a sauna, jet bath, bubble bath, and waterfall shower. The baths alternate between men and women in the morning and evening. The on-site restaurant serves cuisine featuring local seasonal ingredients including sweetfish from the Katsuura River and mountain vegetables. Day-trip bathing is available for 650 yen for adults and 350 yen for children. The inn is also popular as a rest stop for pilgrims on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage and the Bangai pilgrimage routes.
