Washikura Onsen Kogen Ryokan is a hot spring inn located at an elevation of 1,230 meters within Bandai-Asahi National Park in Fukushima City, making it the highest-altitude hot spring in Fukushima Prefecture. A member of the Association to Preserve Japan's Secret Hot Springs, the inn was rebuilt in 2001 as a two-story reinforced concrete building with 16 guest rooms. Its most distinctive feature is the natural emergence of two entirely different spring types: a weakly sulfuric spring and an acidic iron mineral spring. The weakly sulfuric spring is a simple sulfur hot spring producing milky-white water, while the acidic iron mineral spring is classified as an acidic iron (II, III)-aluminum-sulfate spring with a strongly acidic pH of 2.7, producing brownish water. Source temperatures are 50 and 71.2 degrees Celsius respectively, with 100 liters per minute flowing naturally, all maintained as free-flowing source water. Visitors can enjoy a total of seven bathing facilities including the famous outdoor bath surrounded by stone walls, two indoor baths, and five outdoor baths. The highland climate keeps the area cool even in summer, making it popular as a summer retreat. The acidic iron mineral spring is said to be effective for gastrointestinal diseases, neuralgia, diabetes, women's diseases, and chronic skin conditions. The inn operates seasonally from mid-April to late November, closing for winter. Day-trip bathing is available from 10:00 to 15:00 (last entry 14:00) at 800 yen for adults.
