Makukawa Onsen Mitoya Ryokan
Hot Spring Overview
Makukawa Onsen Mitoya Ryokan is a secluded hot spring inn located at an elevation of approximately 1,300 meters on the slopes of Mount Azuma within Bandai-Asahi National Park in Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture. Founded in 1893 (Meiji 26), it has served as the inner retreat of Tsuchiyu Onsen for over 130 years and is a member of the Association to Preserve Japan's Secret Hot Springs. The inn possesses two private source springs: Makukawa No.1 Spring, a simple hot spring (pH 7.5, source temperature 72.5 degrees Celsius) producing milky-white water, and Makukawa No.5 Spring, a simple sulfur hot spring (pH 5.9, source temperature 44.9 degrees Celsius) producing green-brown water. The ability to enjoy two distinctly different spring qualities is one of its greatest attractions. The mystical waters subtly change color from day to day and are renowned for their skin-beautifying effects due to high metasilicic acid content. All six bathing facilities maintain 100% natural free-flowing source water. The observation outdoor bath features a hollowed-out cypress tree estimated to be 800 years old, offering panoramic views of the Azuma Mountains. The inn has 25 rooms in a three-story reinforced concrete building with a capacity of approximately 100 guests. It operates seasonally from late April to mid-November, closing for winter. Day-trip bathing is available from 10:00 to 15:30 at 700 yen for adults.
