Geto Onsen Kanko Hotel
Hot Spring Overview
Geto Onsen Kanko Hotel is a toji (hot-spring cure) lodge standing beside the Geto River gorge deep in the Ou Mountains, within Kurikoma Quasi-National Park in Kitakami, Iwate Prefecture. Geto Onsen is said to have been discovered around a thousand years ago and was ranked as Ozeki of the East in Edo-period hot spring rankings. The hotel sits at the entrance of the hot spring valley, just across Hakuen Bridge. After a long period of closure, the property was acquired by GETO Village Inc., founded by two people from the Tokyo area, and reopened on October 3, 2025.
Two of the valley's springs are piped into the bathhouse: Hakuen-no-yu, a calcium-sodium sulfate spring emerging at 62.3 degrees Celsius with a flow of roughly 170 liters per minute, and Hebi-no-yu, a sodium-calcium chloride spring emerging naturally at 38.3 degrees Celsius with a pH of 6.4. Neither is diluted nor reheated, so the baths are pure free-flowing spring water. The property also holds Shintaro-no-yu, a calcium-sodium sulfate spring at 47.8 degrees Celsius and pH 6.8 that wells up through the floor of a riverside bath. The water is clear and colorless with a faint mineral scent, and thick mineral deposits encrust the spouts. Listed indications include arteriosclerosis, cuts, burns and chronic skin conditions.
Bathing is currently limited to the gender-separated indoor baths, which swap between men and women in the evening. The open-air bath and the riverside Shintaro-no-yu bath were still suspended for safety work as of June 2026. No meals are served: this is a self-catering lodge with a simple cooking area, vending machines and free Starlink Wi-Fi. Day bathing costs 800 yen for adults and 400 yen for children, from 10:00 to 17:00 with last admission at 16:00, closed Wednesdays and Thursdays. Heavy snow closes the access road and the inn from mid-November to early May.
