Mahiru Onsen
Hot Spring Overview
Nestled in the Shimonosawa hamlet at the foot of Mt. Mahiru in Nishiwaga Town, Waga District, Iwate Prefecture, Mahiru Onsen is a communal bathhouse known as a hidden hot spring of the Ou region (Ou no Hito). It first opened in 1967, and the current building, complete with bathing facilities and a rest area, was completed in 1996. For more than half a century it has served as a gathering place for local residents and a resting spot for hikers, stream anglers, and visitors seeking therapeutic bathing (toji). Since April 2022, the facility has been operated by the Shimonosawa Hamlet Management Council, a community of just 36 households who continue to care for the spring together.
The water is classified as an alkaline simple hot spring (hypotonic, alkaline, low-temperature spring). The source emerges at a relatively low 32.7°C and is gently heated to around 43.0°C before being supplied to the bath in a free-flowing (kake-nagashi) style. Key mineral components, based on a 2009 analysis, include sodium ion 188mg/kg, chloride ion 122mg/kg, bicarbonate ion 118mg/kg, and metasilicic acid 107mg/kg. The water carries a faint yellow-green tinge, and bathers often notice a distinctively smooth, slippery texture on the skin. As a public bathing facility, the water also undergoes chlorine disinfection for hygiene purposes.
The facility is modest in scale, offering only a single indoor bath separated by gender, along with a changing room, rest area, restrooms, and an AED. Parking is available for 8 vehicles (an additional paved area about 30 meters away can be used when full). Admission is 440 yen for general visitors (high school age to 64), 260 yen for elementary and junior high students, 350 yen for town residents aged 65 and over, and free for preschoolers and visitors with disabilities (grades 1-2). Hours run 13:00-21:00 from May to October (11:00-21:00 on weekends and holidays) and 13:00-20:00 from November to April, closed every Tuesday. With no lodging on site, it operates purely as a day-use facility, its simple, unadorned character embodying the local toji bathing culture that has sustained mountain communities for generations.
