Totsukawa Onsen Hotel Subaru is a 100% free-flowing natural hot spring hotel located in Totsukawa Village, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, deep in the mountainous Kii Peninsula. Totsukawa Onsen was discovered around 300 years ago during the Genroku era by a charcoal maker, and in 2004 Totsukawa Village became the first municipality in Japan to declare all its hot springs as 100% natural free-flowing (kakenagashi). In 1985, the area was designated as a National Health Resort Hot Spring together with Yusenchi and Kamiyu onsen. The spring water is a sodium bicarbonate spring (low osmotic pressure, neutral, high temperature) with a source temperature of 70 degrees Celsius and an abundant flow of 800 liters per minute, requiring no heating or dilution. The water has a slight bluish-green tint with faint metallic and sulfurous aromas. The hotel features a variety of baths including a main indoor bath, open-air bath, cypress bath, goemonburo (iron pot bath), waterfall bath, lying bath, and sauna. Drinking the spring water is also possible. A foot bath is available near the main entrance, and an indoor heated pool using hot spring water operates year-round. The hotel earned two stars in the Michelin Guide 2017 Nara edition and is situated along the Kumano Kodo Kohechi pilgrimage route, making it popular with hikers. Guests can enjoy local cuisine featuring deer meat, river fish, and mountain vegetables in the serene mountain setting of Totsukawa.
