Shinhotaka Onsen Shinhotaka-no-Yu

Hot Spring Overview
A rustic mixed-gender open-air bath located along the Gamata River in the Shinhotaka Onsen area of Okuhida Onsengo, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. The greatest attraction is the spectacular openness that allows bathers to enjoy views of the magnificent North Alps mountains including Mt. Yari (Yarigatake) and Mt. Kasa (Kasagatake). The large bathing pool, approximately 10 meters in diameter and surrounded by massive boulders, is so open that it can be seen from the bridge above, offering a truly immersive experience in nature. The history of Shinhotaka Onsen dates back to the Sengoku period (Warring States period), when retainers of Takeda Shingen are said to have bathed here, suggesting the hot spring was discovered even earlier. The spring water is a simple hot spring (tanjun onsen) from the Takara source, with colorless and transparent water provided as free-flowing kakenagashi. The water temperature can become lukewarm when river water mixes in, which adds to the wild hot spring charm. Bathing in swimwear is recommended, and separate changing rooms are provided for men and women. In autumn, surrounding foliage is illuminated and nighttime bathing events are held. The facility can be used for a cleaning cooperation fee of approximately 300 yen, and operates seasonally from late April through October 30. It is closed during winter due to heavy snowfall.
