Toshichi Onsen Saiunso is situated at an elevation of approximately 1,400 meters, making it the highest hot spring in the Tohoku region. Access requires about an hour's drive through mountainous roads via the Hachimantai Aspite Line from the Matsuo-Hachimantai Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway. Please note that this route is closed during winter months (from early November to late April) due to heavy snowfall, limiting accessibility during that period. For overnight guests, a free shuttle bus is available, but advance reservation is required.
The inn, Saiunso, operates on self-generated electricity, which may result in occasional voltage instability. Additionally, there is no landline telephone service, and mobile phone reception can be spotty due to the remote location. The facilities are modest, offering a rustic mountain lodge experience that allows guests to immerse themselves in the natural surroundings.
The hot spring features multiple open-air baths, including six mixed-gender baths, as well as separate indoor and outdoor baths for men and women. All baths are fed by free-flowing natural hot spring water. In the mixed-gender baths, guests are permitted to wear bath towels or bathing garments, ensuring comfort for all visitors. A unique feature of these baths is the natural mineral-rich mud that accumulates at the bottom, which guests often use for skin-enhancing mud packs—a distinctive charm of this secluded hot spring.
Considering these characteristics, Toshichi Onsen is classified as Level 4 (Highly Secluded) according to the "Secluded Hot Spring Map" criteria.
From Matsuo-Hachimantai IC (Tohoku Expressway), take National Route 282 and Prefectural Route 23, then follow the Hachimantai Aspite Line (approximately 1 hour).
