Goshogake Onsen
Hot Spring Overview
Goshogake Onsen is a solitary hot spring inn located at an altitude of 1,000 meters on Mount Hachimantai within Towada-Hachimantai National Park in Kazuno City, Akita Prefecture, near the border with Iwate Prefecture, along the Hachimantai Aspite Line. This hot spring has been cherished as a therapeutic bathing resort for about 300 years and is famous for the traditional saying: "You come to Goshogake by horse, and go home on foot in geta." This phrase illustrates how people who arrived ill enough to need a horse could recover through the hot spring therapy to walk home in traditional wooden sandals. The inn was established in 1881 by Abeni Hachi from Yanai Village. The source spring "Oname-Motome-no-Yu" is a simple sulfur spring (hydrogen sulfide type) with a temperature of 88.4°C, pH 3.2, and total mineral content of 571.0mg/kg, making it a high-quality hot spring. The greatest feature of Goshogake Onsen is the ability to enjoy seven different types of bathing methods. The gender-separated large bathhouses offer mud bath, box steam bath, volcanic bath, waterfall shower bath, neuralgia bath, sauna, and open-air bath. The most popular is the mud bath, which provides excellent whole-body hot compress effects and skin beautification. By slowly soaking in a half-body bath while applying the rich, fine mud from the source spring to the skin, it warms the affected areas and makes skin smooth. The box steam bath, where you stick your head out of a wooden box and warm yourself with steam, has been a specialty of Goshogake Onsen since ancient times. Another unique feature of Goshogake is the Goshogake-style ondol, which heats rooms from the floor using abundant geothermal heat and natural steam from the surroundings. This system passes hot spring steam under the floor to enhance therapeutic effects through geothermal heat, allowing continuous absorption of thermal energy into the body with less burden on the heart, and is said to be effective for neuralgia. The hot spring is beneficial for neuralgia, rheumatism, diabetes, chronic gynecological diseases, and gastrointestinal ailments. Accommodation is available in both the ryokan section and the self-catering therapeutic section, and day-trip bathing is also possible. Day-trip bathing fees are 800 yen for adults and 400 yen for children, with special discounts on the 26th of each month ("Bath Day") to 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for children. The surrounding area features the Goshogake Nature Research Trail, a 40-minute walking course where you can observe volcanic phenomena such as Onuma Pond and mud volcanoes. Goshogake Onsen's black eggs are also known as a local specialty.

Nearest Stations
By car, access from Tohoku Expressway Kazuno-Hachimantai IC via Route 341 is approximately 30km, about 45 minutes. Alternatively, from Tohoku Expressway Matsuo-Hachimantai IC is approximately 35km, about 50 minutes. From Kazuno-Hachimantai IC, take Prefectural Road 23 (Hachimantai Aspite Line) toward Mount Hachimantai summit. In winter (early November to late April), the Hachimantai summit side Aspite Line and Route 341 (toward Lake Tazawa) are closed, so access is only possible from Route 341 Kazuno direction (Tohoku Expressway Kazuno-Hachimantai IC). Free parking is available for about 30 cars. The parking lot is limited due to the valley terrain and may become full during autumn foliage season and holidays. For mountain climbing use (Yakeyama, Hachimantai), the second parking lot along the Aspite Line is more convenient. For public transportation, the inn does not provide shuttle service, and you need to combine route buses with Hachimantai's ride-share service "Dragon-GO." From Morioka Station, take the Iwate Kenpoku Bus nature exploration bus to Hachimantai Summit bus stop (about 2 hours), then Dragon-GO (about 18 minutes). From JR Kazuno-Hanawa Station, there is a shuttle service once daily round trip during winter season (reservation required). The nearest station is JR Hanawa Line Kazuno-Hanawa Station, approximately 30km away.
