Akagawa Onsen Akagawaso
Hot Spring Overview
Akagawaso is a day-use hot spring facility at Akagawa Onsen in Kuju-machi, Taketa City, Oita Prefecture, at the southern foot of the Kuju mountain range. It is known for its bluish milky-white sulfur water and an open-air bath with a view of a waterfall.
The water is a carbon dioxide-containing sulfur-calcium-sulfate cold mineral spring, also described as a gypsum-sulfur spring. There are four sources, and the sulfur aroma is distinct. The water is cold. It is said to be good for neuralgia, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, poor circulation, stomach and bowel complaints, cuts and burns.
The baths consist of an indoor bath, which is heated, and an open-air bath filled with cold spring water. Bathers commonly alternate between the cold and warm water. The facility is open from 10:00 to 18:00, and admission starts at 1,000 yen for adults. Soap and lotion made with the spring water are sold on site.
