Nuruyu Onsen Kyodo Yokujo

Hot Spring Overview

Nuruyu Onsen Kyodo Yokujo is a single communal bathhouse on the eastern edge of a small settlement in Kitazato, Oguni Town, Aso District, Kumamoto Prefecture, tucked into the Kyushu mountains. The name is written with characters read Nuruyu, meaning lukewarm water, a phonetic borrowing that simply records how cool the spring is. Local tradition holds that retainers accompanying feudal lords were left here at the tepid spring to ease the fatigue of travel. The same village is the birthplace of Kitasato Shibasaburo, a founding figure of modern Japanese medicine, and a memorial hall stands nearby.

The water is a simple sulphur spring emerging at about 38 degrees Celsius and settling to roughly 36 to 37 degrees in the tubs. Cobblestones pave the entire floor of the bath, and the source rises directly through the gaps between them, a rare foot-of-the-bath emergence. No water is added, and there is no recirculation or chlorination; the spring simply fills the tub and pours continuously over the rim. The water is clear with a faint blue cast, carries drifting white mineral flakes, and gives off a light sulphur scent.

Bathing is in gender-separated indoor tubs only, with the bathhouse divided into one large and one small pool. The larger tub holds the unheated source water, while the smaller serves as a finishing bath and may be warmed for limited hours in the cold season. Admission is 200 yen for adults and 100 yen for children, open from 8:00 to 21:00 year-round. The bathhouse is unstaffed and fees go into an honesty box, so small change is essential. Parking and toilets are available at the adjacent Nuruyu Fureai Kaikan.
