Yamazato Onsen Ryokan is a single-inn hot spring lodge tucked deep in the mountains of Kamibun-otsu, Susaki City, Kochi Prefecture, surrounded by clear mountain streams and forested slopes near the headwaters of the Shimanto River system. The inn serves an alkaline simple sulfur cold mineral spring (hydrogen sulfide type) on a 100 percent flow-through basis, and although the source must be heated due to its low natural temperature of around 17 degrees Celsius, the bath water is fully drained and refilled with fresh spring water every day. The bath has the unmistakable scent of sulfur and a soft, slightly slippery feel typical of alkaline waters. The building retains a strongly Showa-era atmosphere with shared toilets and communal dining in a large tatami hall, offering a glimpse of an older style of Japanese inn culture that has nearly disappeared. With only ten guest rooms, this small ryokan is known for the proprietress's home-cooked meals featuring local vegetables, pork shabu-shabu hot pot, and hand-pressed sushi. The remote location, where mobile phone signals do not reach, makes it ideal for a quiet retreat away from modern distractions.
