Kannon Onsen

Kannon Onsen is a drinkable, private-source free-flowing hot spring set in the hills of Oku-Shimoda in Yokokawa, Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture. During construction of the facility, a small Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) statue about 15 centimeters tall was unearthed from the ground; it was consecrated at Sensoji Temple in Asakusa and enshrined at the entrance, giving the spring its name. Known for its abundant flow and strongly alkaline water, it is celebrated as one of Izu's finest drinkable hot springs.

The spring is an alkaline simple spring. Welling up from around 600 meters underground, the source is strongly alkaline at roughly pH 9.5 and is exceptionally soft water. It emerges at 42.6 degrees Celsius with an abundant flow of about 250 liters per minute, supplied as a private-source free-flow without heating or dilution. As one of the few springs permitted for drinking, its clear, silky water is renowned as a beautifying bath and a spring one can drink.

Besides overnight lodging, day-trip bathing is available at the Kannon Principle facility, which offers indoor baths (hot and cool), an open-air bath, a bubble bath, a sauna, and a footbath. Day-trip admission is 1,300 yen for adults and 700 yen for children on weekdays, and 1,500 and 800 yen on weekends and holidays (member discounts available). Overnight guests can enjoy the exclusive Kannon-no-yu Galatea bathing area, touring its eleven baths from 16:00 until 8:30 the next morning.
