Yugashima Onsen Yumotokan

Yumotokan is a hot spring inn set along the mountain stream of the Kano River at the foot of the Amagi range in Yugashima, Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is celebrated as the inn where the novelist Yasunari Kawabata wrote his masterpiece The Izu Dancer in 1922 (Taisho 11); the small four-and-a-half-mat room where he stayed is still preserved as it was and known as the Kawabata Room. Even after graduating from university, Kawabata returned to Yugashima year after year for long stays. The inn is also a member of the Japan Association of Secluded Hot Spring Inns.

The spring is a calcium-sodium sulfate spring, emerging at a source temperature of about 45 degrees Celsius. The colorless, transparent, and gentle water is served as pure free-flowing hot spring with no added water and no reheating, offering the calm, mild bathing feel characteristic of sulfate springs.

The bathing facilities include a large indoor bath that alternates between men and women, an open-air bath on a rotating basis, and a private open-air bath. The open-air bath sits on the bank of the Kano River, allowing bathers to soak while listening to the murmur of the stream. Overnight stays with two meals start from around 18,850 yen. Day-trip bathing is available from 12:00 to 14:30 for 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for children, and a private bath can be used for 1,000 yen per 30 minutes.
