Kumotori Onsen Takata Greenland
Hot Spring Overview
Located in the mountains along the Takada River in Takata, Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture, Kumotori Onsen is a secluded hot spring facility near the Kumotori-goe route of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail. Officially known as Takata Greenland Kumotori Onsen, it operates as a nature-based accommodation and training facility. The water is an alkaline simple hot spring with a notably high pH of 9.5. The source temperature is 29.0 degrees Celsius, so the water is heated before use. The most distinctive feature is its rare bluish milky-white water, unusual for the Kii Peninsula, which contains germanium. The facility also features a medicinal herb bath using Tenday Uyaku (Lindera strychnifolia), a plant associated with the legend of Xu Fu (Jofuku), who reportedly came to Japan seeking the elixir of immortality on orders from China's first emperor. The outdoor rock bath offers views of the Takada River and surrounding lush green mountains, allowing bathers to enjoy the sound of the flowing stream. Situated at the midpoint between the three Kumano Grand Shrines, it serves as an accommodation base for Kumano Kodo walkers. An RV park is also available for campervan travelers. Note: The bathing facilities have been closed since February 3, 2025, due to detection of Legionella bacteria, with no reopening date announced.
