Kannawa Onsen Toji Yanagiya
Hot Spring Overview
Toji Yanagiya is a traditional hot spring lodge on Kannawa Ginza Street in Kannawa Onsen, one of the eight hot spring districts of Beppu. It carries on an inn that has stood since the Meiji era, and the building has been refreshed with art; the noren curtain at the entrance was designed by the artist Michiyo Mochizuki. Kannawa is a stone-paved spa town where steam rises from the ground, and the custom of long stays for hot spring cures is still alive here.
The water comes from the inn's own source on the property and is a sodium chloride spring. The source temperature is about 99.6 C and the water contains 477.7 mg of metasilicic acid. It has a mild saltiness, feels soft on the skin and keeps the body warm after bathing. The baths use free-flowing source water. Listed benefits include neuralgia, muscle and joint pain, frozen shoulder, poor circulation and fatigue.
The main building has an indoor bath, an open-air bath and a steam bath fed by hot spring steam on the second floor, plus an indoor bath on the first floor. Men's and women's baths switch at 11 pm. Overnight guests can use the courtyard hell-steaming pots free of charge and eat the food in the shared kitchen area (7:00 to 21:00). Rooms in the main building start at 6,750 yen per person without meals (two guests per room, tax included).
